Communication: High-carbon materials, which contain a high density of strong, directed C-C bonds, are expected to exhibit some of the outstanding properties of diamond and graphite, e.g., hardness, thermal and electrical conductivity. The thermolysis of biphenylene-containing monomers is demonstrated to offer a promising new approach to polybenzoid networks such as that shown in the Figure.
