The cooperation of all scientific disciplines is required for the development of new product fields and technologies in materials science, and is the linchpin of Bayers research philosophy. In this essay is discussed how an interdisciplinary effort has been the source of a multitude of innovative impulses, and is a valuable tool for the company. This direction is documented with examples from Bayers materials science R&D portfolio, and is highlighted by a summary of their efforts in the development of holographic technology.
