Communication: The direct observation of 2D mesoporous silica by HRSEM (high resolution scanning electron microscopy) is reported here for the first time. The HRSEM images reveal that the structure consists of hexagonally packed short silicate rods (shown schematically in the Figure), which helps to explain the observed properties of mesoporous silica.
