Vesicles and liposomes: A self-assembly principle beyond lipids
Vesicle research has expanded into a much broader range of experimental conditions and extended materials properties since the lifting of the restriction to lipids as the building blocks (tectons) of vesicles. New and potential applications of vesicles-in particular biomedical applications-are outlined after a discussion of the factors governing the spontaneous formation of vesicles (see Figure) by self-assembly.
