Highly ordered thin films of thiophene mesogens are prepared from solution by spin-coating and subsequent thermal treatment. Monodomain film formation is seen to occur over an entire polyimide-coated 150 mm diameter glass wafer, as evidenced by polarized optical microscopy (see figure). Monodomain thin films have been characterized by different X-ray diffraction techniques and are found to exhibit single-crystalline alignment.
