A series of Rh/SiO2 catalysts were prepared by a sol-gel method, characterized by N-2 physical adsorption, H-2 chemisorption and MR, and studied in the hydrogenolysis of propane. The results show that rhodium exists in very high, nearly atomic dispersion in the catalysts after reduction; this was not obtained by conventional preparative methods.
