Simple, safe and low-cost nuclear plants as a heat source for seawater desalination
The deep pool reactor (DPR) is an extremely simple and safe reactor. It could be used as a heat source for seawater desalination due to its appropriate power size and temperature of heat supply. This paper will cover its main design features, safety analyses and economic performance. A simple, safe and low-cost nuclear plant coupled with a LT-MED low-temperature desalination process will decrease the cost of fresh water produced compared to other heat-only reactor systems. This will substantially favor the penetration of nuclear energy into the seawater desalination market and global environmental protection.
