Electrocatalytic Hydrogenation of Phenol on Highly Dispersed Pt Electrodes
The electrocatalytic hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanol on platinum dispersed on graphite particles has been studied. Current efficiencies as high as 85% were obtained on electrodes with platinum loading as low as 2%. The high performance of these electrodes may be attributed to their high surface area which allowed the application of very low current densities without decreasing the total current. The effect of temperature, the presence of quaternary ammonium salts and the Teflon content on the electrolysis current efficiency was also studied.
