Characteristics of Electrochemically Prepared Poly-(1,4-Dimethoxybenzene) Electrode
Anodic oxidation 1,4-dimethoxybenzene (PDMB) leads to formation of a conductive film deposited on platinum electrode if strict control of humidity is maintained. A modified electrode was tested in several electrolytic media for oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions, offering a wider potential window for oxidation than for reduction. It is apparent that oxidation of Fe(II) to Fe(III) is minimized in presence of poly-PDMB. Morphology of the deposit depends on deposition time. Conductivity of poly-PDMB, tested in solution, was found to be higher when morphology of the deposit consisted in dimples arrangement. Silver deposition on the polymer surface was performed as qualitative proof of its conductivity and to demonstrate that reactions are taking place on the polymeric matrix rather than on the platinum surface.
