Electrochemistry of Organosilicon Compounds .5. Synthesis of Poly((1,2-Dimethyldiphenyldisilanylene)Phenylenes) by Electrolysis of bis(Chloromethylphenylsilyl)Benzenes
Electrolytic reduction of p-, m-, and o-bis(chloromethylphenylsilyl)benzenes (3a, 3b, and 3c) in 1,2-dimethoxyethane was investigated. The electrolysis of 3a with the use of copper as the anode and tetrabutylammonium tetraphenylborate as the supporting electrolyte afforded poly[p-(1,2-dimethyl-diphenyldisilanylene)phenylene], in which no silicon-oxygen bonds in the polymer backbone are included. Similarly, poly[m-(1,2-dimethyldiphenyldisilanylene)phenylene] was obtained from 3b in good yield, while the electrolysis of 3c produced poly[o-(1,2-dimethyldiphenyldisilanylene)phenylene] only in low yield.
