Polymer plating of 2-dioctylamino-1,3,5-triazine-4,6-dithiol to magnesium alloys
2-Dioctylamino-1,3,5-triazine-4,6-dithiol (DO) was found to electrochemically polymerize on AZ91 (magnesium alloy) plates. This method of plating metals is called "polymer plating." An aqueous 1 M NaOH solution was selected for the polymer plating of triazine dithiols on magnesium alloy plates as an effective electrolytic solution for the formation of polymer films and the suppression of side reactions. Mg(OH)(2) and MgO were formed as by-products during the polymer plating process. The contact angle of the polymer films was 98 degrees. The alkyl chains on the magnesium alloy plates were orientated vertically and were closely packed. Real impedance was similar to7,000 W cm(-2) for the DO polymer film. The i(corr) of the polymer film was 4 x 10(-2) A cm(-2). The corrosion resistance of DO polymer film is thought to be a result of the fact that the alkyl chains in the film are highly oriented and closely packed.
