Electrolytic ammonia synthesis in molten salts under atmospheric pressure using methane as a hydrogen source
A novel electrolytic ammonia synthesis from methane and nitrogen gases in molten salt under atmospheric pressure is proposed. It was confirmed that ammonia was synthesized in LiCl-KCl-CsCl-Li3N (0.5 mol % Li3N added) melt at 773 K using following reactions; 3/4CH(4) + N3- --> NH3 + 3/4C + 3e(-) (anode), 1/ 2N(2) + 3e(-) --> N3- (cathode). On the other hand, ammonia was not synthesized in the same melt at 673 K. (C) 2005 The Electrochemical Society.
