Mechanism Studies of Coal-Liquefaction in a Nondonor Solvent Using C-14-Labeled 1-Methylnaphthalene
Neither methyl nor ring C-14-labeled methylnaphthalene shows extensive incorporation into the soluble products produced during coal liquefaction. The two coals utilized in this study showed as high or even a higher conversion at short reaction times in the nondonor 1-methylnaphthalene as in the donor solvent tetralin. The data eliminate significant solvent incorporation as a reason for the high coal conversion in the nondonor solvent.
