Binder-free formation of alumina ceramics by a microwave-assisted hydration reaction
A novel binder-free formation of ceramics via microwave irradiation is developed. The irradiation of microwave to an alumina green body enhances strongly the hydration reaction between the water and the particle surfaces, creating surface aluminum trihydroxide structures of adjacent particles that bind together tightly. This process makes it possible to manufacture mechanically strong green bodies with excellent shape retention without organic binders.
