NAPHTHENATE ESTERS AS PVC PLASTICIZERS - SYNTHESIS AND EVALUATION OF SOME ESTERS
Naphthenic acid was prepared by air oxidation of naphthenes in presence of KMnO4 as catalyst A part of the synthesized naphthenic acid was converted into naphthenic methyl ester. The ester was reduced to the corresponding naphthenic alcohol. Different naphthenates of the type diol bis naphthenate and bis naphthenyl dibasic acid were prepared. These naphthenates and di-n-octylphthalate (DNOP) - as a reference commercial plasticizer - were compounded with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and evaluated as plasticizers. Volatility and resistance to kerosene extraction turned out to be better than that for DNOP. The naphthanate plasticizers have good compatibility with PVC resins.
