Studies on the progressive extraction and depolymerisation of coal macerals
The present investigation deals with depolymerisation of extracts of macerals from high sulphur Indian coals, obtained by extracting maceral with pyridine for 1 and then 24 h, and in a soxhlet until extraction was complete. The depolymerised product was extracted with benzene and benzene:methanol (1:1) and then chromatographed. The important fractions were subjected to GLC, NMR, IR and UV spectral analysis. The results show that the number of condensed rings in the cases of vitrinite and exinite is not greater than two, the sulphur is present mostly in a heterocyclic structure, and that the binding between two units is mainly by (-CH2-), (CH3) and/or heterocyclic linkages.
