Based on the codon usage, we introduce an alternative approach to characterize and compare DNA sequences, which requires neither graphical representation and calculations of invariants of higher order matrices nor multiple sequence alignment. The utility of our approach is illustrated by an examination of the similarities/dissimilarities among the DNA sequence of full beta-globin genes of 10 species. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V.
