COMBINED ENERGY AND WASTE MINIMIZATION IN MULTIPRODUCT BATCH PROCESSES
Batch processing has in the past been the most widely used mode of operation in chemical plants producing fine chemicals and other speciality products, but it also constitutes at present an attractive manufacturing alternative due to its inherent flexibility of today's changing and uncertain market. Recent work focused on increasing the traditional low productivity of batch processes by maximizing the active times. In this study we include additionally two main components in the objective function of the overall process optimization; energy and waste minimization. To this end an extended modelling framework is presented that includes the detailed process operations, utilities requirements, materials reuse strategies and overall environment impact.
