Temperature Dependent Relaxation of a "Solid-Liquid"
We have used the Interfacial Force Microscope to perform temperature dependent indentation measurements on a model viscoelastic material, Silly Putty. By transforming time dependent stress relaxations into frequency dependent modulus, we can identify the temperature dependence of the elastic and viscous response of an experimentally challenging material. This technique promises to be useful in determining the mechanical properties of composite materials with microscopic spatial resolution. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
