Heavy-oil recovery from matrix during thermal applications in naturally fractured reservoirs
This study covers experimental and numerical analysis of two issues encountered during steam injection applications in naturally fractured reservoirs: (1) the efficiency of heat transfer between fracture and matrix under steam-flow effects in the fracture and (2) the influence of temperature on the matrix recovery. First, static capillary imbibition experiments were conducted at different temperatures and mechanisms contributing to production rate and recovery were identified. Then, the effect of steam injection rate on the efficiency of matrix heating was investigated both experimentally and numerically. Critical injection rate for an efficient heat transfer to matrix was defined, and the efficiency was evaluated for matrix size, matrix thermal conductivity and the injection rate.
