One-Dimensional Model for a Direct Methanol Fuel Cell with a 3D Anode Structure
A one-dimensional model has been developed to aid in the rapid screening of three-dimensional (3D) anode configurations for a direct methanol fuel cell. The model was fitted to experimental data for a single electrode structure having 1, 2, or 4 mg cm(-2), and the resulting parameters were used in the model to qualitatively predict the performance, current distribution, and methanol concentration distribution of a multilayered anode structure having one, two, or four layers and a total catalyst loading of 4.0 mg cm(-2) carbon-supported (Vulcan XC-72) 40 wt % Pt-Ru. This model can be used to provide insight into the conditions for which crossover can be completely eliminated. (C) 2010 The Electrochemical Society. [DOI: 10.1149/1.3505039] All rights reserved.
