Laser-induced fluorescence of hydrogen via the E, F-1 Sigma(+)(g) -> B-1 Sigma(+)(u) transition: Rotational-state-dependent collisional quenching
Laser-induced fluorescence of hydrogen molecules via the E, F-1 Sigma(+)(g) -> B-1 Sigma(+)(u) transition was J-state selectively investigated by two-photon excitation from X-1 Sigma(+)(g) to E, F-1 Sigma(+)(g). From the pressure dependence of the decay rate, the collisional quenching rate was found to decrease from 1.8 x 10(-9) cm(3)/s for J = 0 to 0.9 x 10(-9) cm(3)/s for J = 3. The collisional quenching cross-section was calculated by a Born approximation with a quadrupole-dipole interaction potential, which well reproduced the tendency of the experimental results.
