In this article the prospects and challenges of ionic liquids for electrodeposition processes are discussed. Despite wide electrochemical windows their electrochemical behavior is surprisingly complicated. They can influence the deposition process, and on solid surfaces solvation layers are formed which are that strongly adsorbed, that they can be probed by atomic force microscopy. Ionic liquids influence electrochemical reactions which might have prospects for an application driven electrochemistry.
