Effect of processing parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-steel composite foam
Al-steel composite foams comprise of steel hollow spheres embedded in an aluminum matrix and are processed using a gravity casting technique. The effect of processing parameters such as casting temperature and cooling rate on the microstructure and mechanical behavior was studied to establish structure-property relationships. Results show that the amount and composition of intermetallic phases present in the foam microstructure is directly related to casting temperature and cooling rate. Highest strength and energy absorption were obtained from Al-steel foams with fast solidification rates that minimize the growth of intermetallic phases.
