The Effect of Nanoparticles on Mass Transfer for an Impinging Jet Electrode
Mass transfer of an impinging jet electrode was studied by measuring the limiting current for the reduction of ferricyanide with and without alumina nanoparticles in solution. The limiting current was measured with 50 nm alumina particles at loadings of 50-160 g l(-1) and at flow rates ranging from similar to 1 to 6 l min(-1). The addition of nanoparticles did not affect the limiting current, except in the cases of the highest flow rate of 6.1 l min(-1) and high particle loadings of 80 and 160 g l(-1) where the limiting current was enhanced by 56-70%, possibly due to more particles arriving at the electrode surface. The Chin and Hsueh correlation for limiting current for an impinging jet electrode system seems applicable for particle loadings less than 65 g l(-1) and flow rates below 3 l min(-1).
