The process of Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) of waste biomass and the implementation within a continuously operating, industrial sized plant is described. The advantage of the process regarding the utilization of biomass and the energy balance is explained. Typical product data is shown for HTC coal produced from sewage sludge. It is verified, that the process shows good energy efficiency and is suited for the utilization of different input materials.
