Data are presented on the content of carcinogenic hydrocarbon benz-a-pyrene in pitch from the pyrolysis of wood. It is noted that in wood pyrolysis benz-a-pyrene forms in two temperature ranges; low benz-alpha-pyrene pitch must be extracted in the temperature ranges where benz-a-pyrene forms in negligible quantities.
