Electrochemical characteristics of nickel hydroxide modified by electroless cobalt coating
Spherical beta-Ni(OH)(2) was used as an active material of pasted positive electrode in a Ni-MH battery. To improve the performance of the positive electrode, the spherical beta-Ni(OH)(2) particles (mean diameter 15 mu m) were modified with electroless cobalt coating. Electrochemical properties such as discharge capacity and high-rate dischargeability of the positive electrode were generally improved by surface modification. Cyclic voltammetric studies indicated that due to the presence of cobalt coating on the surface of Ni(OH)(2) particles, the electrode exhibited a better reversibility of Ni(OH)(2)/NiOOH redox reaction and the higher oxygen evolution overpotential. This apparently would increase the charge efficiency, improve utilization of active material and minimize concurrent oxygen evolution.
