Effects of oxy-fluorination on mechanical properties of carbon fibers- reinforced polarized-polypropylene matrix composites |

In this work, oxy-fluorination on carbon fiber surfaces were carried out to improve the interfacial adhesion between carbon fibers and polarized-polypropylene (P-PP). The surface properties of oxy-fluorination carbon fibers were characterized using a dynamic contact angle, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. And their mechanical properties of the composites were measured by a interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and critical stress intensity factor (KIC). As a result, it was showed that the adhesion strength between the carbon fibers and polypropylene was significantly increased after the oxy-fluorination treatments. This result indicates that the oxy-fluorination produced highly polar functional groups on the fiber surface, resulting in the strong adhesion between polar-CF and polar-PP in this composite system. |
