Self-healing polymers, novel smart materials that are able to repair mechanical damages spontaneously or under proper stimuli, have gained great attentions in recent years. Disulfide bonds, which become dynamic upon exposure to heat, can be used to provide healable properties to polymer network. Epoxidized natural rubber (ENR), a reactive functional rubber derived from natural rubber, can be crosslinked by diacids or diamines through their reaction with epoxy groups of the rubber. In this study, ENR network containing disulfide bond was prepared by using dithiodipropionic acid as a curative. Structure, thermomechanical properties and self-healing behavior of the ENR networks were studied by FT-IR, dynamic mechanical analysis, and tensile testing, respectively. It was shown that self-healing ability of the ENR network is affected by crosslink density. |
