We demonstrated the synthesis of arrays of metal nanorings by using diblock copolymer micelles loaded with ionic liquids (ILs). Nanometer-sized spherical micelles of polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) were first obtained in toluene, which consisted of the soluble PS corona and the insoluble P4VP core. Then, imidazole-based ILs were selectively incorporated into the P4VP core. After spin-coating of IL-loaded PS-b-P4VP micelles onto a solid substrate, a micellar monolayer was treated with acidic metal precursors. We then treated the micellar monolayer with oxygen plasma, which produced arrays of metal nanorings, instead of spherical nanoparticles, due to the presence of ILs in the core. The diameter and spacing of nanorings were controlled by the molecular weight of the copolymer and the amount of ILs loaded. |
