Study on the Polymerization of Methyl Methacrylate using Fe(Ⅱ)X2/Pyridylphospines Catalytic Systems |

ABSTRACT: Two pyridylphosphine ligands, 2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine (DPPP) and 2-[(diphenylphosphino)methyl]pyridine (DPPMP), were successfully used in the iron-mediated polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA). Kinetic studies have been carried out by measuring monomer conversions and polymer molecular weights against polymerization time. Most of the polymerizations with the pyridylphophine ligands were controlled with a linear increase in the number average molecular weights (Mn) vs conversion and relatively low molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.2-1.5) throughout the reactions, and the measured weights matched the predicted values. These polymerization reactions were speculated to follow a mechanism similar to that of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). |
