An asymmetric gemini type ofphoto-responsive surfactants with an azobenzene group and long alkyl chaingroups,N,N,N-(azobenzene-4-oxy-2-hydroxypropyl)dimethyl-N’,N’,N’-(alkyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl)dimethylethylene diammonium methylsulphate (GnAZ0DA, n=12, 14, and 18), weresynthesized. The GnAZ0DA series obtained at a high yield even having longchains because a simple process that allows good response in the mild conditionwas designed. The trans-GnAZ0DAseries were converted to 92.5% of the cisform when exposed to UV light, and were reversibly converted to 73.7-75.0% ofthe trans form when exposed tovisible light. The CMC value of the trans-GnAZ0DAseries was from 2.79 x 10-5 to 1.62 x 10-4 mol/L, and thevalue of the cis-GnAZ0DA series wasfrom 5.48 x 10-5 to 3.75 x 10-4 mol/L. This is a typicalcharacteristic of the gemini surfactants, which have very low CMC values comparedto counterpart monomers. |
