A series of amphiphilic rod-coil triblock copolymers containing a rod-like, conjugated poly(9,9-didodecyl fluorene-2,7-diyl) block segment with coil-like, hydrophilic end blocks. Examples include poly(D,L-lactide)-b-oligo(9,9-didodecyl fluorene-2,7-diyl)-b-poly(D,L-lactide) and poly(ethylene oxide)-b-oligo(9,9-didodecyl fluorene-2,7-diyl)-b-poly(ethylene oxide). The chemical structures and physical properties were characterized by 1H NMR, thermal analysis, GPC, photoluminescence, small angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy. The addition of the end blocks to the rod-like PF segment resulted in the microphase separation between the block segments which decreased the effective conjugation length of the PF moieties. The photoluminescence spectra measured from the thin films revealed that the coil-like endblocks, attached to the PF segments, suppressed the excimer formation of the PF molecules during annealing at high temperature. |
