The pitch-based carbon fibers are produced by electron beam (E-beam) pretreatment and heat-treatment. The effects of E-beam irradiation on pitch fibers in stabilization process are investigated by FT-IR, elemental analysis (EA), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In addition, tensile strength test of single carbon fiber obtained via E-beam irradiation is carried out to compare their mechanical properties. The oxygen contents and stabilization index (SI) calculated from XRD of pitch fibers irradiated by E-beam increase with increasing absorbed dose. FT-IR spectra shows that C-H stretching band significantly decrease and C-O stretching band appears as well as those of carbonyl and carboxylic group on E-beam pretreated pitch fibers. The carbon fibers treated with absorbed does of 3000 kGy shows tensile strength of 0.54 GPa, which is comparable to general purpose carbon fibers. The E-beam pretreatment in carbon fiber production provides with efficient oxidation and dehydrogenation. |
