To develop the thermal management materials with excellent heat dissipation, rod-shaped mesogenic monomer (RMM) was newly designed. Based on the combined spectroscopy, microscopy, and thermal analysis, RMM was successfully synthesized and exhibited a smectic A mesophase. RMM was photopolymerized in mesophase and isotropic phases to form a thermal conducting network. Regardless of the molecular packing and orientation of RMM, the thermal conductivity of polymeric films was excellent over 1 W/mK and anisotropic thermal conductivity by the control of molecular alignment was estimated to be 2.5 W/mK. The polymerized thermal conducting films have great potential to advanced thermal management materials.
