UHMWPE/CaCO3 composites prepared by in-situ Ziegler-Natta polymerization |

Polymerization filling technology (PFT) is an in situ blending method via polymerization of using Ziegler-Natta or metallocene-based catalyst immobilized on the surface of filler. In the present study, UHMWPE/CaCO3 composite has been prepared by in situ polymerization of ethylene using a Ti-based Ziegler-Natta catalyst supported on the surface of CaCO3 inorganic particle. CaCO3 Particles dispersed in the polymer matrix have been known to increase the toughness of polymer in various polymer/CaCO3 composites. Microscopic observations of filled composites revealed that the polymerized composite prepared by PFT had excellent dispersion of CaCO3 in the UHMWPE matrix. In a tensile test, the polymerized composite showed an increased break strain compared to neat UHMWPE, which confirmed the effective toughening effect of CaCO3 as well as the outstanding interfacial properties produced in the in situ polymerization. |
