The poor dispersibility of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in either aqueous or organic solvents has limited their practical applications. To overcome this impediment, researchers have focused on achieving the dispersion of MWCNT in solvents by either the addition of surfactants or by modifying the MWCNT surface chemistry. However, utilizing surfactants to obtain MWCNT dispersions was found to be unsuitable in many applications, because they need to be removed from the final product. In this study, MWCNTs were functionalized using either a mixture of H2SO4 and HNO3 or dodecyl alkane group for alkylation, followed by dispersed in common organic solvents including DMF, acetone, toluene, chloroform, and methylene chloride at 0.05 wt% of MWCNT concentration. The dispersity of MWCNTs was confirmed using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The dispersive stability of MWCNT for 10 days was also investigated using a light scattering. |
