A novel conjugated polymer comprising diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) as an electron-defect unit alternating with an alkyl-substituted thiophene as electron-rich fragment. DPP has been proved to be a versatile building block in combination with electron-rich fragments to build efficient small bandgap donor polymers for organic photovoltaic applications. In an attempt to improve increase the solubility of DPP-based material, a hexene moiety was attached to the DPP polymer backbone. The introduction of hexene side chain still maintained the bandgap properties of DPP. The 3-alkylthiophene was copolymerized with DPP via direct heteroarylation polymerization in a moderate condition and had a relative high yield. In order to characterize the polymer, 1H NMR, XRD, DSC, UV tests were performed. CV analysis was also carried out to determine the electrochemical property of the polymer. |
