Synthesis of Low Bandgap, Conjugated Polymers Based on Thienothiophene and Benzothiadiazole |

Microwave-assisted cross-coupling reactions were successfully demonstrated to synthesize low bandgap conjugated copolymers containing thieno[3,4-b]thiophene (TT) with various alkyl chains as electron rich unit and benzothiadiazole (BT) as electron withdrawing unit. The conjugated backbone composed of TT and BT monomer units effectively reduced the energy bandgap of the final polymers by donor-acceptor strategy. The length of the alkyl units of the TT comonomer was changed to both enhanced the solubility of the conjugated polymer and modulated the energy level of the polymers. Their chemical structures and photovoltaic properties were carefully investigated by using various characterization techniques. |
