Peripheral nerve regeneration using PCLA nerve guide conduit |

In the treatment of peripheral nerve defects, the autologous nerve grafts technique has unavoidable disadvantages, such as the limited availability and donor-site morbidity of autografts. Accordingly, many synthetic materials and scaffold fabrication methods have been developed for peripheral nerve regeneration. In this study, we fabricated MPEG-b-(PCL-ran-PLLA) (PCLA) tubular scaffolds by solid freeform fabrication (SFF) and prepared small intestine submucosa (SIS) conduit to compare as the material for nerve regeneration. We confirmed that PCLA conduit has good flexibility, pertinent biodegradability and a less in vivo inflammatory response, indicating tissue biocompatibility. In addition, peripheral nerve regeneration was observed through the staining for nerve cells and Schwann cells. In conclusion, the PCLA conduit can serve as a suitable scaffold for treatment of peripheral nerve defect. |
