In vitro and in vivo characteristics of porous chitosan scaffolds with surface-immobilized nano-hydroxyaptite |

The surface engineering of scaffold pores is one of the most important subjects to develop high-performance bone-regenerative materials, since it determines whether cells can effectively adhere, migrate, and proliferate on porous scaffolds. Recently, we developed a new fabrication approach for hybrid scaffolds by immobilizing nano-HAp on the pore surfaces of chitosan scaffolds. In this work, we describe in vitro and in vivo characteristics of these hybrid scaffolds by estimating osteogenetic properties and bone regeneration. The biological characteristics of hybrid scaffolds strongly supported that scaffolds with surface-immobilized nano-HAp provided more favorable environments for cell-scaffold interaction, osteogenesis, and in vivo bone formation.
