Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) has been broadly applied to the anti-corrosive coating for the protection of galvanized steel. To improve the corrosion protection ability of the coatings, we introduced amino-quinone functional group because they have been very effective for corrosion protection due to the high affinity to the surface of metals. We prepared anti-corrosive WPUs containing amino-quinone diol with polyol, DMPA and IPDI, depending on the molar ratios of each monomer. The coating formulations were prepared by mixing commercially available surface treatment agent with anti-corrosive WPUs. Coating formulations were coated on the galvanized steel using bar-coater, and thermally cured. We also prepared coatings containing inorganic nanotubes which corrosion inhibitors can be loaded. The coatings having anti-corrosive WPU or inorganic nanotube exhibited much improved anti-corrosion properties by salt spray test and the results from each coating will be further discussed. |
