Effects of Al promoter on mesoporous Rh-C3N4 for liquid-phase carbonylation of methanol to acetic acid |

The roles of Al promoter on the heterogeneous Rh-C3N4 (Al-modified on Rh-incorporated mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride) were investigated for a liquid-phase carbonylation of methanol to acetic acid (AA) to compete with the commercialized Rh-based homogeneous catalyst under the reaction conditions of 463 K and CO pressure of 4.0 MPa for reaction of 3 h. The Al modified Rh-C3N4 at an optimal amount of Al below 0.5wt% showed a higher AA yield above 90% compared to the unmodified Rh-C3N4. A highly dispersed Lewis acidic Al species on the Rh-C3N4 seems to increase the reverse esterification reaction rate of methyl acetate (MA) intermediate to AA, which is favorable reaction on the acidic sites, and the increased hydrolysis of MA was responsible for a higher AA yield. The catalytic properties of the Al-modified Rh-C3N4 catalysts were characterized by using XRD, BET, XPS, ICP and TEM analysis. |
