Respiratory viruses such as influenza virus and SARS-CoV-2, are transmitted predominantly via aerosol form. This fact leads to emphasize the importance of filter-based protective equipment. Chemically modifying filters with molecules which can bind with viruses are being considered as a promising approach for production of respiratory virus-capturing filters. Tannic acid, a plant derived polyphenol, and sialic acid, which is present on the surface of airway epithelial cells and plays main role in virus entry into host cell, can be used as a molecules for capturing influenza virus. In in-solution capture assays using diverse microorganisms, the TA-functionalized filter exhibited efficient capture efficiency in a nonspecific way. But, the SA-functionalized filter specifically captured influenza virus. These results indicate that TA-and SA-filters can prevent the spread of influenza virus, which of filter functionalization strategy is expected to be potentially useful in this pandemic era. |
