Improvement of paint bake response in AA6016 sheets with pre-aging and pre-straining |

Pre-aging and pre-straining immediately after solution treatment are two common methods to suppress the detrimental effect of natural aging on the paint bake response of 6xxx aluminium alloy. Based on our previous pre-aging experiments, we found that the pre-aged AA6016 sheets have a limited paint bake response since it has a low alloy content. In this research, we try to find an optimum process that can improve the paint bake response and increase the yield strength after paint baking with pre-aging and pre-straining together. To balance the formability before paint baking and yield strength after paint baking, three pre-aging conditions 150℃×5min, 120℃×30min, 100℃×2h and 0%, 3%, 5% pre-straining treatments were selected. Samples only preformed with pre-straining also be checked for comparison. Tensile specimens along the rolling direction were used to perform the pre-straining treatment. Hardness values before and after paint bake treatment were measured to optimize the condition. DSC test was applied to investigate the effect of pre-straining on the precipitation behaviour. Tensile test was applied to check the mechanical properties. |
