Silver (Ag) nanoplates with triangular sharp tips exhibit fascinating optical properties, but these shapes make them thermodynamically unstable and thus cannot be used for sensing application. In this work, we developed a colorimetric sensing platform for detecting bromide ions (Br-) by using the intrinsic instability of the nanoplates. Specifically, the system we designed is based on the LSPR properties that are directly related with the spontaneous rounding of the sharp corners of triangular Ag nanoplates embedded in the hydrogel exposed to bromide ions. The sensor based on hydrogel can successfully analyze the bromide ions at a broad range of samples concentrations in an aqueous medium. Moreover, our solid-phase sensing system has several advantages such as simplicity, easy handling, and long-term preservation compared to the solution sensing system. Our experimental results indicate that they can determine the concentrations of bromide ions in natural waters. |
