Biologically, H2 can be produced through dark fermentation and photofermentation. Dark fermentation is rapid in H2 production rate and simple in its production process, but the yield is low as 2 mol/mol glucose in most microorganisms. In the present presentation, we report metabolic engineering of Escherichia coli to improve H2 production activity as well as H2 production yield. Furthermore, the co-production of ethanol with H2 is presented which can be an alternative solution to the low H2 production yield and low energy recovery in fermentative H2 production. A series of gene disruptions/modifications in central carbon metabolism and H2 production enzymes and their effects are presented. |
