Synthesis of poly(ester-co-carbonate)s by terpolymerization of CO2 with epoxides and anhydrides using Zn/Co double metal cyanide catalyst |

The low cost and low toxicity of carbon dioxide (CO2) make it an attractive industrial raw material. Consequently, the methods for using CO2 as a practical carbon feedstock are being aggressively investigated. One of the most intensely studied areas involves the use of CO2 for the synthesis of polymers. Copolymerization of CO2 with cyclohexene oxide (CHO) has been carried out by using Zn/Co double metal cyanide catalyst with excellent catalytic activity. In order to improve physical properties polycarbonates, we introduced cyclic anhydrides such as phthalic anhydride and pyromellitic dianhydride as comonomers in polymer synthesis. Terpolymerization of CO2 with CHO and cyclic anhydrides resulted in poly(ester-co-carbonate)s. Improved thermal and mechanical properties of the resultant terpolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, universal testing machine, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and various spectroscopic techniques. |
