Effect of hollow spheres on the damping properties of flexible polyurethane foam |

Flexible polyurethane (PU) foams are frequently prepared from filled polyols in which polystyrene or styrene- acrylonitrile copolymer is dispersed in colloidal particles. The polymer particles of filled polyols enhance cell opening and make the polyurethane foams resilient. The viscoelastic behavior of polyurethane prepared from polyols filled with hollow sphere was investigated in comparison with polyurethane prepared from the filled copolymer polyols employing a dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) over a frequency range 0.01-10 Hz. It was found that PU filled with hollow spheres of polystyrene show excellent damping efficiency. PU prepared from the filled copolymer polyol shows maximum tanδ with increasing the filled copolymer polyol content. Damping properties of PU investigated are discussed in terms of the storage modulus (E’) and loss modulus (E’’) change. |
